Geographic Parthenogenesis: Recurrent Patterns Down Under

نویسنده

چکیده

A recent study reports striking similarities in the origin and spread of parthenogenesis in two distantly related animals of the Australian arid zone, suggesting that the loss of sex was driven by a very general selective force.

What does the geography of parthenogenesis teach us about sex?

Theory predicts that sexual reproduction is difficult to maintain if asexuality is an option, yet sex is very common. To understand why, it is important to pay attention to repeatably occurring conditions that favour transitions to, or persistence of, asexuality. Geographic parthenogenesis is a term that has been applied to describe a large variety of patterns where sexual and related asexual f...

A new hypothesis to explain geographic parthenogenesis

In many plants and animal species, asexuals are more common in marginal habitats such as high latitudes or altitudes than their closely related sexual counterparts. Here we propose a new hypothesis to explain this pattern called “geographic parthenogenesis”. In marginal habitats, populations may often exist as metapopulations with high degrees of subdivision and local extinction and recolonizat...

Spatial distribution and reproductive phenology of sexual and asexual Mastocarpus papillatus (Rhodophyta).

Species of the genus Mastocarpus exhibit two distinct life cycles, a sexual alternation of generations and an obligate, asexual direct life cycle that produces only female upright fronds. In the intertidal red alga, M. papillatus (Kützing) sexual fronds dominate southern populations and asexual fronds dominate northern populations along the northeast Pacific coast, a pattern of spatial separati...

Evolutionary Origin and Phylogeography of the Diploid Obligate Parthenogen Artemia parthenogenetica (Branchiopoda: Anostraca)

BACKGROUND Understanding the evolutionary origin and the phylogeographic patterns of asexual taxa can shed light on the origin and maintenance of sexual reproduction. We assessed the geographic origin, genetic diversity, and phylogeographic history of obligate parthenogen diploid Artemia parthenogenetica populations, a widespread halophilic crustacean. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We analys...

O-30: Comparing Expression Patterns of Endometrial Genes in Implantation Failures and Recurrent Miscarriages with Fertile Couples Following ICSI/IVF Using in Silico Analysis

Background: To screen and diagnose patients with recurrent abortions and implantation failure after IVF/ICSI, differentially expressed genes of endometrium through DNA microarrays were monitored. Materials and Methods: Microarray expression profile of GSE26787 dataset from GEO database was used to analyze gene expression profiles of 15 endometrial biopsy samples- five from control fertile (CF) ...
